Chapter Six

“I can’t believe I let you talk me into this.” Christy clutched the reins attached to the bridle on the brown horse and looked down from where she sat in the roomy saddle. It seemed a long way to the ground. It was a long way, she reminded herself. If Shane hadn’t given her a helping hand, she would have needed a ladder to climb on.

“You’re a natural,” he assured her, hiding a half grin when she muttered and yanked at the brim of the creamy Stetson he’d insisted she wear. She had coiled her glorious hair up before she’d put it on, and now strands were slipping down, clinging to her temples. Shaded by the brim of the hat, her eyes were a deep green. A mildly annoyed deep green.

Christy sighed. “Yeah, but a natural what? Pushover? Why didn’t I just ignore you this morning?”

“Because you couldn’t?” He nudged Milt closer to her horse, Belle.

“The fact that I didn’t want you disturbing Aunt Tillie might have had something to do with it,” she said dryly. “Just how long would you have banged on my bedroom window if I hadn’t opened it?”

“I’d still be there.”

“That’s what I figured.” She knew a determined man when she saw one, and that’s what had been leaning against the RV, tapping on the window when she pushed aside the curtains. Which was precisely why she had broken a world record in the shower and slid into her light blue jeans and comfortably worn cowboy boots, pulled a raspberry sleeveless shirt over her head, and slipped out the front door in less than ten minutes. “So why the crack of dawn?”

“That’s when things start around here. I thought you’d like to see the ranch from a cowman’s point of view.”

“Which is from the back of a horse?”

He nodded, his voice bland. “That’s usually the way. Sometimes we break down and use a pickup or the Jeep. Every now and then we even pull out the helicopter.”

Christy looked at him, studying his face to see if he was serious. “You have a helicopter?”

Shane shrugged. “Just a little one. It’s a quick way to check the herds.”

Just a little one? Stunned, she accidentally jiggled the reins and jumped when Belle snorted. Letting out a long breath when the old mare just kept plodding along beside Milt, Christy took another look around her. This time she saw it through new eyes. The rambling old house and the impressive barn were in top-notch condition; they lacked nothing that money and sweat could provide. Apparently, at least judging by the difficulty he’d had in pointing out the ranch’s boundaries, the land for miles around belonged to Shane. Add a helicopter to that and what do you have? she asked herself.

A very rich man.

And that meant another black mark on her mental checklist. Now he matched her exes in every respect: an unflagging focus on his work, into control in a big way, hard-edged, worth a bundle and wanted a woman—on his terms.
